Mr Looi Kien Leong has been at the forefront of the ICT and multimedia industry since technology spreads its roots in Malaysia in the early 1980s. He is an active leader, proponent, and supporter of the ICT industry.

He graduated from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia with a Bachelor of Economics in 1975-1977 and Graduate Diploma in Computer Science in 1979.

Looi is the founder and Executive Chairman of 1001 Technologies Sdn Bhd. Twenty eight years ago, he founded SCS Computer Systems Group in Malaysia (a subsidiary of Singapore Computer Systems Ltd which is part of the Singapore Technologies Group). He grew the Group from zero base to one of the biggest systems integrator in Malaysia.

Looi is also a notable leader of the Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation  (ASOCIO). In recognition of his credentials, he was awarded the ASOCIO Personality Award in November 2003 and subsequently appointed as ASOCIO Vice President before he was elected as current ASOCIO Chairman.

Looi has been an active proponent of PIKOM, the Association of Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia, for the past fifteen years in many capacities including Councilor for Distributions Group, Treasurer, Secretary, Deputy Chairman and Chairman 2001/2003 of PIKOM. During his tenure as PIKOM Chairman, Looi effectively contributed strategies and charted directions to propel the ICT and multimedia industry growth in Malaysia. Through his vast experience and expertise in PIKOM, Looi currently holds the post of Advisor/Chairman of International Affairs, charting strategies for export markets.

Looi was elected to represent Malaysia as a member of the steering committee (Board) for the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA), a world association governing the ICT industry and was the Chairman for WITSA Global Trade Committee in 2008/2009.

Looi had also successfully championed the bid to host the World Congress in Information Technology 2008 (WCIT) in Malaysia, making Malaysia the first South East Asian country to host this prestigious ICT event. The WCIT is a premier world conference held every alternate year. He was appointed as Director in WCIT 2008 Sdn Bhd and also Chairman of WCIT2008 Project in PIKOM.


Looi has been a key member in helping the Malaysia ICT industry to identify individuals, students, entrepreneurs, SMEs and organisations with outstanding achievements. He has been a member of the Faculty Industry Advisory Panel of The Faculty of Information Technology, Multimedia University of Malaysia (MMU) since 2006.

Looi’s experience in judging included Premier IT Awards, PIKOM/Computimes IT Awards 2001, Asia Pacific Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) IT&T Awards (APMITTA) 2002, MSC-Asia

Pacific ICT (MSC-APICTA) 2003-2007 in various categories, International Asia Pacific ICT (APICTA) 2004-2008 in various categories and has been appointed as its Chief Judge for 2010. He had also involved in the judging of HSBC Entrepreneur Awards 2006-2011.

Looi has represented Malaysia’s interests in the international arena by leading delegations and actively participating in WCITs (2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 & 2010); the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies (APRICOT), the Malaysian Trade and Investment Mission to various countries, the Multimedia Super Corridor 5th International Advisory Panel Meeting in 2001 and 2nd Global Knowledge Conference.

Looi was a prominent speaker at Australia Malaysia Free Trade Agreement Conference in 2005, The ICT SME Summit 2007 on The Net Generation SME in Bangkok, The NASSCOM India Leadership Forum 2008 on ‘CONNECTED ASIA - the rising Giant!!’, Computerworld Malaysia Data Center Forum 2008 on “Operating The Strategy”, World Information Technology Forum 2009 in Hanoi on Public And Private Sector Partnership Through ICT

Enabling: A Malaysia Perspective and ASOCIO Multilateral Visit to Suzhou&Chongqing in 2009 on Strengthening The Business Relationship Between Asian Countries For Asia Enterprise Application Promotion.
