Azman Hashim, with vast contribution to the economic facet of Malaysia and business edification, stands amongst the esteemed persons of Malaysia and the world. Presently, he is recognized as the 11th richest man of Malaysia.
HE IS a survivor by all accounts. He escaped death in a horrific car crash many years ago. He faced his baptism of fire in the corporate world duringthe property crash of 1985. And he managed to wriggle his way out of the deepest recession the Malaysian economy ever experienced in 1998.
Tan Sri Azman Hashim is the comeback kid of Malaysian banking. At the height of the currency crisis, he almost lost his banking empire. Under the central bank-driven banking consolidation programme, Azman's bank was to be swallowed by a smaller financial group. However, Azman managed to convince the authorities to give his group anchor bank status. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the Arab-Malaysian group's financial arm rebounded strongly. Its strong performance paved the way for Azman to package a restructuring scheme to address the group's RM1.4 billion debts. Creditors approved the scheme in January last year. Azman's personal debts, which in 1998 was said to be about RM600 million, has alsobeen reduced to a more manageable level.
An affable character, the 61-year-old Azman controls six listed companies through his flagship, Arab-Malaysian Corporation Bhd. He honed his banking skills 40 years ago when he joined Bank Negara at age 21. An accountant by training, Azman was appointed to the board of Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank), the leading bank in the country, in 1966. At 31, he became its executive director, a post he held until 1980. After a two-year stint in Kwong Yik Bank (Maybank's subsidiary), Azman bought Arab- Malaysian Merchant Bank in April 1982. Azman gradually built up that acquisition into a financial supermarket.
He also ventured into property development, which has proved to be a bane to the group in times of recession. With a penchant for fast cars, water sports and snorkelling, Azman also sings and has cut a few albums together with his wife.
